21st Glückstadt Culture Night

21st Glückstadt Culture Night, Saturday evening in the old town centre. The concept is called “cultural bites”: short programme slots of about half an hour each, but in many places at the same time — Markt, Fleth, harbour and Kirchplatz, all within walking distance.

For photography that means one thing above all: pace. Rarely more than fifteen minutes between two slots, and as close as the venues are to one another, they are not next door. The evening was less a stroll than a run from station to station.

Then there was the turnout. The smaller venues were full throughout, some of them simply packed. Getting in was often half the work — finding a spot from which a picture was possible at all was the other half.

The finest place of the evening was the town church, for its atmosphere, for the room itself. Truly beautiful pictures were possible there: early in the evening the vocal ensemble with “A Little Jazz Mass”, and at the end once more “Wo sind die Clowns?”.

Outside on the market square MC Mac Cool was at work, in the vaults of the Königskeller SwingKiss played, and between the shelves of the town library sat Lucky Uke.

In the Palais für aktuelle Kunst the piano trio Hosho played. In the Lütt Huus the only performance of the evening took place.

Of course that was far from everything. But I don’t want to pre-empt the pictures in the series.
